BALA

(Shaam-Meera Jasmine)

It has been a slow and steady rise for Shaam, the hero of 12B. Added to that, both his films ('12B' & 'Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke'), haven't done well at the box office. But though few in number, Shaam has got films with some good directors. 'Lesa Lesa' with Priyadarshan, 'Pepsi' again with Jeeva, 'Iyarkkai' with editor-director Lenin's assistant Jana, and 'Bala' where he is co-starring with Meera Jasmine. For Meera, 'Bala' is her second film, after 'Run' with Madhavan.

'Bala' is directed by debutant Deepak who had assisted editors Lenin-Vijayan, and director A.R. Gandhikrishna. Produced by Rajababu and Raju Mahalingam for Goldmine Pictures, 'Bala' has music by Yuvan Shanker Raja, editing by V.T. Vijayan and cinematography by Priyan. The supporting cast has Thilakan, Vadivel, Rajan P. Dev, Murali of Malayalam films. Mayilsamy, Sumitra, Monish, Raghuvaran, Karunas, Nagesh and Meera Krishnan.

Some scenes were shot on a boat about fifteen kilometre from the harbour, in Chennai. Taking part were the lead pair Shaam and Meera Jasmine. It had the duo enjoying a boat ride. Meera playfully tells Shaam, "Hei, nee romba azhga irukke..." Shaam replies, "Talk about something else". "It's my birthday today," says Meera. "All of a sudden if you tell me it's your birthday, what can I gift you!" Saying this Shaam jumps into the water before the shocked eyes of Meera. As she looks around anxiously and in slight panic, Shaam re-emerges from the water and climbs into the boat. In his hand is a shell, which he hands over to Meera, wishing her a happy birthday. Meera overwhelmed by his gesture gives him a hug and kiss.

Again at the Vauhini Studios, Chennai, a lavish set was erected where Shaam and Meera Jasmine danced to the beat of a song. Canning the shot was cinematographer Priyan.
