(Surya, Laila, Sneha)

Surya, Sneha and Laila team together in ‘Unnai Ninaithu’ written and directed by Vikraman. It comes after the director’s super hit film ‘Vanathaippol’ the Vijaykant - starrer. The film is produced by Lakshmy Movie makers for whom Vikraman had earlier directed a films. The supporting cast has Ramesh Khanna, Charlie, Pandu, R.Sunderrajan, Ramji, Kumaresan, Madan Bob, Mayilsamy, Thalaivasal Vijay, Delhi Ganesh, K.K.Sounder, Singhamuthu, Balu Anand, Pallavi, Uma Maheshwari, Satyapriya, and Shiela.

The film introduces a new cinematographer S.Balasubramanian who had apprenticed with P.C.Sriram. Editing is by V.Jaishanker, sets are designed by Thotta Tharani, stunts arranged by Jaguar Thangam, music is by Sirpi, dance choreography by the team of Shivashanker, Thara and Cool Jayant. Some scenes were shot in Chennai where a set resembling a lodge was erected. The unit shifted to Sri Lanka to picturise a song, sung by Unni Menon and Sujatha. Picturised on Surya, Laila and Sneha, it captured the exotic locations at Kandy, Ramboda falls, etc. Three other songs were shot in Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. It is the first time that director Vikraman has chosen foreign locations to shoot his songs.

Most of the story takes place with the backdrop of a lodge with a mess attached. To get the right location for this, the unit had travelled to many places, but no suitable location was found. It was then that a set was erected at the Campa Cola grounds, Chennai. Some scenes taken there involved Surya, Laila, Charlie, Chitra Lakshmanan, Ramesh Khanna and R.Sunderrajan. A shot had them playing cards on the terrace of the lodge. Surya, sitting a little away from them and lost in thought suddenly spoke “Why do you waste your time playing cards? Have a couple of drinks and it will refresh you!” The surprised players at first reluctant, finally give in and soon they were downing alcohol. Suddenly Surya sees Laila, daughter of the mess-owner Thalaivasal Vijay, entering the area. Quickly doing a volte face, Surya hides his drink and pretends to reprimand his friends on their drinking habit. As the friends look up shocked, Laila who had got some sweets to give them, gives it to Surya and goes away, glaring at his friends as she leaves the place. After she leaves, Ramesh Khanna gives a piece of his mind to Surya. “We were on our own playing cards. It was you who made us drink, and now you act the innocent man in front of her!” As Vikraman guided the artistes, Cinematographer Balasubramaniam canned the shots.

Centering around love, sacrifice, sentiment and some action, the film is produced by Muralidharan, Swaminathan and Venugopal. Incidentally it was Vijay who was first signed for the film, and a part of a song too was shot on him. But due to differences that cropped up between the hero and the director, Vijay was replaced by Surya. For Surya, it is one of the more promising films he has signed. For Vikraman has the knack of getting the best out of his artistes.
