The theatres that are screening 'Gemini' wear the festivities look these days.
Outside the hall, we've got people with more than their share of 'O Podu's.
Don't even ask the atmosphere inside the hall. During the climax, the audience
sends out 'O's along with Vikram. It has been ages since a frenzy of this level
was seen. Bharadwaj, who had mesmerized the audience to flock to the theatres,
can now proceed to the next step.
This too is a story based on rowdies. But a good screenplay & Music sets
this apart from the junk. Hey, we forget. 'Kalabhavan' Mani's villainous act was
perfect. He draws huge applause by mimicing one animal or the other throughout
the film. 'Kalabhavan Mani's 'Teja' is one of the best handled character in
Tamil Cinema.
Story? Vikram & 'Kalabhavan Mani' are rowdies. As usual, Vikram nose dives
in love with Kiran at the very first sight, thanks to her great looks. He even
goes to Evening college for her. On the advice of the DGP, he yearns to reform,
but due to the harassments of the villains, he fails. Then, with his sharp
brains, he finally outsmarts & overpowers them and ends it with a big 'O'.
Just when the movie was running at the speed of the Jet crafts without a moment
of boredom, we have the speed breakers in the guise of Charlie, Dhamu & Co.
When you have the Villain 'Kalabhavan Mani', tickling your ribs, who asked for
these people?
For Vikram, this film is a 'zero strain', fun-filled film. The worshipper of
innovation & novelty that Vikram is, his stunts are pretty ordinary. More
ordinary than Pandiyarajan's stunt sequences. But, the background sounds shatter
the eardrums!
Kiran's selection suits the character. She had hidden every trace of acting
skills and had relied solely on her glamour. There is a huge exhibition cum
display of it. The 'Marwadi' family portrays realism. 'O Podu' Rani is like a
tender coconut water on a hot summer day.
Other than Ilayaraja, nobody else strains much with rerecording processes. Here,
bits of the songs themselves are used in the background. Ashokraja's 'O Podu'
dance choreography is mind blowing.
In the scene when both these rowdies run into each other at the market place,
the camera almost fly in all directions to capture the effect. This effort of
cinematographer Venkatesh had gone down well with the audience.
Director Charan's screenplay demonstrates a mixture of the styles of some of the
greatest screenplay giants. The depth that has gone into the creation of
characters like 'Kai', 'Annamma' & the DGP really elevates the film.
Dialogues are good too. But, just when his friend sacrifices his life for him,
it would have been more appropriate & Vikram had added something more to his
dialogue to Kiran, "people are always born to belong to somebody
else". Maybe something like, "But, people don't normally die for
somebody else", and then go ahead with her vengeance mission.
Vikram, studying in Evening college - the other rowdy kalabhavan with a touch of
comedy - beautiful sentiments woven into a film about 'rowdyism' - the love
scenes that poetically portray the yearnings the film.. is a series of such
interesting incidents and characters. All these being enough satisfaction to the
audience that the audience leaves the hall extremely sated. And just before the
audience leaves the hall, there is Vikram again with a last and final 'O Podu'…
that's just when the audience makes its final collective 'O' and dispenses
happily.
